Luckily, instead of grinding, you can cheese the boss with consumable cards, but it was still disappointing. Some of the optional spells you get are useless, and the final boss battle takes the intriguing but pointless twist to take away your wand for a sword, which will do 0 damage if you haven't got the requisite strength. Despite these improvements, there are some small issues. In PS, as Harry was the only party member, any spell that did not deal damage or heal you was worthless, and Harry's survival was your sole priority, in CoS, the existence of reviving items lessens the danger of wiping and allows you to experiment with playstyles. Not only does this freshen up combat with their abilities, but now it makes sense to use a larger variety of spells. Each has their own special ability and has different spell strengths and weaknesses. ![]() The game also introduces party members, namely Ron and Hermonie. Long animations and pauses are gone spells are no longer a list, now being colour coordinated icons and there is a monster compendium that records what each is weak to each consumable card now has a clear description of its effect, removing the incessant guesswork of PS and enemy distribution is far more sensible. In terms of combat, every issue I had with the combat in the first game has been addressed (and that was like a 500 word diatribe). The dungeons in this game are smaller, which again helps with PS' issue of getting helplessly lost in ambivalently decorated labyrinths. Its not a lot and the minigames are often simple, but it does enough to break up the gameplay into more digestible chunks rather than force feed you turn based combat. There is a much healthier pacing in CoS with its spread of minigames, quests and dungeons compared to PS's card collecting. Despite this slip, CoS makes almost all facets of the game more meaningful. While this is good for the overall balance, the effect on the economy wasn't considered, with battle rewards towards the end of the game being 1/240th of the price of the best equipment, meaning investing in healing or cards is always more rewarding than saving up. The crafting system is gone and enemies don't routinely drop an abundance of items. CoS makes progress to address all of these issues. Philosopher's stone (PS) tried to do many things, that failed due to its contradictory gameplay and mechanics. ![]() Chamber of Secrets (CoS) for the GBC is probably as good as it's going to get. 70% Game Boy ColorI'm not sure I'll ever have the endurance to go through every version of every Harry Potter game, so I'll make my stake now.
